President Speaks
at Los Angeles Conference of American Society of Newspaper Editors
President James Kent Spoke before a luncheon of the American Society of
Newspaper Editors (ASNE) at the Westin Hotel at Los Angeles Airport. Introduced
by Jessica D. Walton, Director and Editor of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
President Kent's remarks focused on poverty among Americans, especially
in minority communities, and praised ethical reporting. The President's
comments particularly addressed concerns of Latino leaders in Los Angeles.
President Kent meets
with Mexican President Velázquez
President Velázquez
called for a "new era of friendship
and cooperation" to solve mutual challenges such as illegal immigration
and drug trafficking. The controversial Pacific-American Free Trade Agreement
(PAFTA) was endorsed by both leaders.

MS. KANHEMAN: Good
morning, everybody. A couple of things to mention. First of all, I want
to mention the First Lady's Appearance when she returns to Washington
tomorrow. She'll be at Montgomery Blair High School in Maryland, and there
is going to be a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony there kicking off the first phase
in the CHILD*First Initiative. You know that's tied to the Protection
of Literacy Act, and debate on that is scheduled to start...Senator DiGiardino
is going to introduce that...this afternoon, I believe.

President Kent spends much of his time in the Oval Office. From
this prestigious office, he directs the affairs of Government.
The first Oval Office was built in 1909 in the center of the south
side of the West Wing; in 1934 it was moved to its current location
on the southeast corner, overlooking the Rose Garden.

Other Important Issues
 |
Sen.
Vincent DiGiardino
- D. New York
Without question Senator Vincent DiGiardino
is the single most important supporter of the President's initiatives
in the Senate. DiGiardino seems content to serve as virtual "Minority
Leader for Life." DiGiardino has family ties to the First Lady,
but is closer to Vice President Russo than to President Kent. |

 |
Sen.
Tom Dawes - R. Ohio
A Bitter rival of the President, Tom Dawes
once beat James Kent in an Ohio Congressional Election. Since then
Dawes has risen to become one of the most powerful and influential
men in the GOP. Dawes already has a PAC and Committee, and seems destined
to be a front-runner against Kent in the 2012 race |
 |
| |
 |
Rep.
Mark Conner - R. Indiana
A first term Representative, Conner has little
seniority, and has infuriated party elders with his brash demagoguery.
The problem is that he is a popular vote getter and has energized
the Christian Right in a swing-state region that will prove critical
to undermining Kent's re-election chances in 2012 |
